Surgical Diseases of Thyroid Gland


Abstract
The thyroid gland is one of the most common organ which is affected by tumor growth, therefore requires surgical intervention in consequence. Being the diagnostic method has improved, the thyroid tumors are seen more frequently than before, and a solitary lump of thyroid gland drives surgeons into difficulty of making decision whether :or not it is¢¥ malignant.
We presented 296 cases of surgical thyroid. disease, admitted and treated surgically at, the Department of Surgery, Kyungpook National University Hospital for 13 year from Apr. 1962 through Mar. 1975, with special emphasis¢¥ on thyroid cancer. Cases were analyzed in its incidences, clinical features, treatment, histological features and complications.
The thyroid cancer revealed 19.3% of all cases. Sex distribution revealed predominance in female with ratio of 10 1 in benign and 5.3 1 in malignant thyroid disease. The cancer is most common in 4th decade, comparing to 3rd decade of benign thyroid disease.
The most common symptom and sign of the thyroid cancer was palpable mass of neck (all cases) and easy fatigability (47.4%), and weight, loss (42.7¡Æ%0), however, the toxic symptom . was found 28% of cases.
The pathological classification disclosed as follows: Thyroid cancer 19.3%, benign adenoma 41%, adenomatous goiter 15% and thyroiditis was 6.6%.
The result of surgery was good. and its complications were minor and negligible.
